Our Story

Every mat begins with a tree that keeps on growing.

A walk in the woods

It started on a quiet autumn morning, on a forest trail just outside Montréal. A fallen trunk had been cut to clear the path, and its face was open to the sky: dozens of rings, one inside the other, a little spiral at the centre, a knot where a branch once reached for the light, a small crack where a hard winter had passed through.

We sat down beside it and started counting. Each ring was a year. Some were wide, from gentle summers. Some were thin, from seasons that asked the tree to hold on. All of them were still there, holding the whole thing together.

It felt a lot like a yoga practice. You show up, you breathe, you grow a little, and every session becomes part of who you are.

The tree that gives without falling

We wanted a mat that carried that feeling, and we found it in cork. Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak. Every nine years or so, the bark is carefully harvested by hand, and the tree simply grows a new one. No tree is cut down. The same oak can share its bark for more than two hundred years.

Bark, from the tree that keeps giving. Breath, from the practice that keeps us grounded. That is where our name comes from.

From the forest to your floor

Our mats are made of a fine-grain natural cork top on a natural tree rubber base. Cork grips better as your practice warms up, stays naturally fresh, and feels warm and alive under your hands.

On our Heartwood mat, we engraved the tree slice that started it all, right at the centre, where you come back to breathe. A slim line runs through it to guide your alignment, like the grain of the wood. Our Essential mat keeps only the cork and our small spiral mark: a rolled mat, ready to unroll.

Little roots, big intentions

We are a small Canadian brand, and we pack every order by hand in paper and cardboard, never plastic. We would rather make one good mat that lasts than many that don't.

So roll it out, take a breath, and add a new ring to your story.

With warmth,
The Bark & Breath team
